Jyoti Singh Pandey is a name which has become synonyms for courage and strong character in India. She might have lost against six rapists in a moving bus, she might have lost the battle for life, but she remained an icon for Indian girls. She is the girl who has shown the path and her fight against all odds raised the entire nation for the safety of its daughters. BBC may ridicule India for this 2012 Delhi Gang Rape Case, but the fact remains that the entire youths of India were on roads or supporting the cause in other forms after that horrific incidents.

It is quite unfortunate that Indian law still doesn’t allow us to write her name. The media is still sticking with the name – Nirbhaya, which was first used by The Times of India. Even the parents of Nirbhaya had clearly said that their daughter had a name and they would like to people call her by real name, that is by Jyoti.

The Supreme Court of India has also upheld the sentence of death penalty against four rapists. One of them has already committed suicide. The last one is out from the reform home.

Jyoti was born in 1989 and brought up in Delhi. Her family is basically from the Balia district of UP. They shifted when her father got a job with Delhi Airport. They were staying in Palam area of Delhi.

Jyoti did schooling from Delhi. Later she took admission in Dehradoon for her Physiotherapy. She was dreaming to become a doctor and had appeared in Pre Medical Test. However, she couldn’t score well and hence took admission in Physiotherapy program. She was eyeing to join a private hospital in Gurgaon as a Physiotherapist.

When Jyoti Singh rode the bus, she was accompanied with her boyfriend Arvind Pandey. Her boyfriend is also from the same district of UP. They became friend during school days and were dating for long. Those rapists had also beaten Arvind and thrown both of them out of bus in a naked condition.
